How to Pick Your First Oracle Decks

I remember it like yesterday: four friends traveled by boat to Estonia and one of them found a metaphysical shop (surprise, surprise). Of course there was a divination tool section with tarot cards and the most elaborate deck was chosen. The one with the most detail and positive “vibration” had a pastel dragon on the front with flowers, swirls and minute constituents of a fantastical nature.

Although tarot was not something I normally practiced, I used these cards to train the third eye. This is the energy center which tells you what is. It’s the one that sees through illusion and helps you to focus so that the real magic can happen. A proper wizard knows that psychic energy tends to “fly” into your consciousness and for which one must train the art of centering.

One of my favorite metaphysical teachers Sonia Choquette said that she only used cards to focus and didn’t really need them in order to read another person’s energy. Would you know that she was only 15? Staring at a randomly drawn playing card, reading the future for her neighbors in Chicago for a tip was pretty brave. (Read about it all in her incredible first book Diary of a Psychic. Hint: she mentions E.T.s at the end!)

In this example, a 52-card deck was used, but ever since Doreen Virtue appeared on the Hay House -scene (a New Thought and self-help publisher founded in 1984 by author Louise Hay) oracle cards are now sold in northern Europe, even. Her first decks were about angels, God’s messengers with unconditional love and the will of God to be of service. Those later evolved into past life, Ascended Master, and Goddess decks. Instead of numbers or the major arcana investigating the Hero’s journey, you could pick a card for daily reminders or focus on a niche topic.

Similarly, Steven Farmer (a former associate and friend of Doreen) worked with animals and these kinds of earth energies, creating decks like Earth Magic and Power Animal Oracle Cards. When you practice psychic ability, these cards are very useful for remote viewing or picking up on spirit animals because you can feel, see and hear them, activating three aspects of your multifaceted ajna center. For instance, when a slithery feeling moved up my back in swirls I pushed that button: “it’s snake, you chose the snake card!” That was one of the most memorable Google Hangouts we did in a group setting and people tend to love this game until the frustration kicks in.

After figuring out what kind of art or subject you are interested in, you’ll probably find that the same card keeps popping up. “How is this happening? The probability of choosing the same galactic card from a deck of 108 cards by Lyssa Royal-Holt twice in a row is slim-to-none?!” When this happens, you need to do what Lyssa’s Pleiadian future self Sasha says, “integrate!” This is also a wonderful sign that the deck is working for you.

By now, the anticipation of doing readings will sneak up on you and you’ll probably want more decks. It’s totally okay to want more decks. The first reading I ever got over the internet was with a vegan, twin flame enthusiast with sixty of them. Just remember that practice makes perfect and these are intuitive development tools.

When people tell you to “cleanse” your deck it’s probably a good idea, at least if the deck belonged to someone else first. Some prefer to knock three times like Tony Orlando, sage like a Native or bless with a crystal tip. Using a wand can help you to point and direct the energy which some people will draw out and into a water basin to discard any negativity, etc. Then you’ll want to keep the cards in a nice place, somewhat like an affirmation that your energy is positive before beginning to use them.

All in all, oracle cards are safe. I say this because a 16-year-old boy contacted me, very upset because his Jesus-loving parents found his tarot deck and thought that meant he was working with the evil D-man. To help him feel better I said this was happening to him to push him into his independence so that he could make it in life and then, as an adult, choose to work with whatever cards or intuitive practice he wanted. It’s true, when you’re under your parents’ roof you have to respect their wishes but in the defense of my passion this is more of a means of connecting people to their hearts and Spirits in order to heal. It’s a fun activity to prove that when you like or love someone, telepathy is real and we are much more than “everything is awesome” -Lego people. A bunch of cardboard with glossy images and creative, positive statements isn’t going to send you to hell. No, they are more likely to look pretty on your shelf and entertain guests who “never did this before!”
